Checking your car battery

Trouble starting your car or van, especially in midwinter, can often be attributed to a flat battery, so don’t get caught cold and follow the advice below.

A fully charged healthy battery should read 12.6v dc.

If you are getting a reading of below 12.3, it means your battery is unhealthy and underperforming.  That’s when you should have it checked by a professional garage technician, before you end up stuck at the end of your drive or out and about.

Whilst the engine is running with the headlights on, a healthy charging system should produce 13.5-14.5v dc.

The only tool you need for this is a cheap multimeter available from most tool/DIY/motor spares stores.

You simply place the red lead on the positive terminal, the black on the negative terminal. And you don’t need to worry if you get them the wrong way round – it will just show the reading as negative.

Why bother with servicing your vehicle?

Regular servicing of your vehicle is imperative to ensure longevity of engine components. It can also increase MPG performance figures by producing a smoother, cleaner running vehicle. Regular servicing will save you money in the long run!

A diesel particulate filter (or DPF) is a device designed to remove soot or diesel particulate matter from the exhaust gas of diesel engines.

A self regeneration process occurs at road speeds higher than those attained on city streets, but vehicles driven mostly at low speeds in traffic can require periodic trips at higher speeds to clean out the DPF.

If the driver ignores warning lights and waits too long to drive the vehicle more regularly above 40mph, the DPF may not regenerate properly because it needs a higher RPM range.  This can cause the vehicle to enter ‘limp’ mode and underperform, sometimes resulting in costly repairs.

This process can be managed using specialist equipment, usually only available at the main dealers, and resulting in larger bills.  At Leyland Auto Diagnostics, we can take care of your DPF maintenance for you at lower cost.
